When to rekey

When rekeying makes sense

Rekeying changes the pins inside the lock cylinder so it works with a new key. The lock stays on the door, and the old keys stop working.

You've just moved in

Previous owners, tenants, agents and tradespeople may all still have a key. Rekeying puts you back in control from day one.

Lost or stolen keys

If your keys are gone, especially with your address on something nearby, rekeying is the fastest way to make them useless.

Tenant or staff changes

Landlords between tenancies and businesses when staff leave. New keys for the people who should have them, nobody else.

Too many different keys

We can key several locks alike, so one key opens the front door, the back door and the gate.

Rekey or change?

Rekeying versus changing the lock

Rekeying is usually the cheaper option because the lock body stays on the door. It is the right choice when the lock is in good condition.

  • Rekey if the lock works well and you only need control over who has a key.
  • Change if the lock is damaged, worn out or not secure enough. See our lock change service.
  • Key alike at the same time: we can set several existing locks to one new key.
  • Keys cut on the spot. We cut your new keys in the van, so you finish the visit with a working set.

How much does rekeying cost?

Rekeying costs less than replacing the lock. The price mostly depends on how many locks you want done and how many keys you need, and we confirm it before we start.

Rekeying a rental property

Between tenancies, rekeying is a simple way to make sure no old keys are still in circulation. In NSW, landlords and tenants have rules about changing locks and handing over keys: the NSW Government guide to keys, locks and security devices in a rental property explains them.

FAQs

FAQs for rekeying

What does rekeying actually do?

We take the cylinder out, change the pins inside to match a new key and put it back. The lock looks the same, but the old keys no longer turn it.

Can every lock be rekeyed?

Most standard pin tumbler locks can. Some cheap, worn or electronic locks can't, and we tell you when a lock change is the better option.

How long does rekeying take?

A typical house or unit with a few locks is a short visit. More locks, or keying everything alike, takes longer, and we tell you before we start.

Can one key open all my locks?

Yes, if the locks are compatible. We can key the front door, the back door and the gate to the same new key.

Is rekeying cheaper than changing the lock?

Usually, yes, because the lock body stays on the door and only the pins change. If the lock is worn or damaged, a lock change is the better spend, and we tell you honestly.

Should I rekey after moving into a new home?

Yes. You have no way of knowing how many copies of the old keys are out there. Rekeying is a quick way to start with keys only you control.

Can you rekey a lock if I have lost all my keys?

Yes. If you are locked out, we get you in first, then rekey the cylinder so the lost keys stop working, usually in the same visit.

Can you cut extra keys at the same time?

Yes. We cut your new keys in the van, so you can have as many copies as you need before we leave.
