When to change

When it's time to change a lock

Changing a lock means taking the old one out and fitting a new one. If the lock still works well and you only want old keys to stop working, rekeying the lock is usually cheaper.

After a break-in

A forced or damaged lock can't be trusted. We secure the door the same day and fit a new lock that matches or upgrades the old one.

Worn or broken locks

Loose bodies, failing mechanisms, keys that catch every time. When a repair is no longer worth it, a new lock is the safer choice.

Moving into a new home

Old hardware and an unknown number of keys out there. Many owners use the move to change to a better lock.

Upgrading your security

Replacing basic builder-grade locks with a stronger deadlock, or with a lock that gives you better control over key copies.

Rekey or change?

Rekey or change the lock: which do you need?

Both stop old keys from working. The difference is what happens to the lock itself.

  • Rekey when the lock is in good condition and you just need new keys. You keep the hardware and pay less. See our rekeying service.
  • Change when the lock is damaged, worn out, low quality or simply not the type you want any more.
  • Not sure? We look at the lock and tell you honestly. If a rekey will do the job, we say so.
  • One visit. Most standard lock changes are done in a single visit, and we cut extra keys for the new lock on the spot if you need them.

How a lock change works

Step 1

Tell us what you need and where. Photos of the lock help us quote faster.

You get a clear price and a time that suits you before any work starts.

Step 3

We do the job

The van carries the tools, common locks and a key cutting machine, so most jobs take one visit.

Step 4

Every lock and every key tested with you before we leave.

Pricing

How much does a lock change cost?

The cost depends mostly on the new lock: a standard deadlatch costs less than a high-security deadlock. We explain the options with their prices before we start, and the price we agree is the price on the invoice.

Changing locks in a rental

Tenants and landlords in NSW have rules about who can change a lock and when. The NSW Government guide to keys and locks in a rental property explains them. After a break-in, a tenant can usually change the lock first and give the landlord a copy of the new key as soon as possible.

FAQs

FAQs for lock change

Can you change my lock today?

Often, yes. Call us and we tell you when we can be there. Standard locks are usually changed in one visit.

Will the new lock fit my existing door?

In most cases we choose a lock that fits the existing holes and cut-outs. If your door needs a different size, we explain the extra work involved before we start.

Should I change the locks after moving in?

You should at least make sure the old keys no longer work. If the lock is in good shape, rekeying is enough. If it is old or low quality, a lock change is worth it.

Do I get new keys with the new lock?

Yes. A new lock comes with its own keys, and we can cut extra copies on the spot if you need more.

Can all my new locks use one key?

Yes. When we change several locks, we can key them alike so one key opens the front door, the back door and the gate.

What should I do after a break-in?

If you are in danger, call 000. Otherwise, report it to the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 and keep the event number for your insurer. Then call us: we secure the door and change the lock if it can't be trusted any more.

Can I upgrade to a stronger lock at the same time?

Yes. A lock change is a good time to move from a basic lock to a stronger deadlock. We explain the options and the price of each before we start.

Can a tenant change the locks?

In NSW, a tenant generally needs the landlord's agreement to change a lock, except in an emergency such as a break-in. In that case, give the landlord a copy of the new key as soon as possible.
