What we install

When you need a new lock fitted

Installation means fitting a lock where there wasn't one, or adding extra security to a door, window or gate. If you want to replace a lock that is already there, see our lock change service.

Deadbolts on front and back doors

A deadbolt is the biggest single upgrade for most Sydney homes. We fit single or double cylinder deadbolts that suit your door and the way you use it.

Security screen door locks

Keyed locks for security screen doors, set up so the screen and the main door work with the same key wherever possible.

Window locks

Keyed locks for sliding and hinged windows, including the ground-floor windows that landlords and insurers ask about.

Gate and side access locks

Gate locks, deadlatches and padlock hasps for side passages, back lanes and garden gates.

Done properly

What a proper lock installation includes

A lock is only as strong as the way it is fitted. A deadbolt in a soft or badly aligned frame is easy to force, and a latch that rubs on its strike plate wears out fast.

  • We check the door first. Material, thickness, frame and alignment decide which lock will actually hold.
  • We recommend, you choose. We explain the options and the price of each, and only fit what the door needs.
  • Clean fitting. Holes bored with a jig, strike plates set flush, no damaged paint or frames left behind.
  • Keyed alike on request. Front door, back door and gate on one key, so you are not carrying a bunch.
  • Tested before we leave. Every lock and every key, opened and closed with you.

Renting? In NSW, tenants generally need the landlord's agreement before adding or changing a lock. Check with your landlord or property manager first, and we can quote them directly.

Locks that meet NSW rental rules

Rental properties in NSW must be reasonably secure, which in Sydney can mean deadlocks on external doors and locks on windows. The NSW Government guide to keys, locks and security devices in a rental property explains the rules. Rapid Key Locksmith holds NSW Master Licence 000110647.

FAQs

FAQs for lock installation

What's the difference between a deadbolt and a deadlatch?

A deadlatch locks automatically when the door closes. A deadbolt has to be locked with a key or a thumb turn and throws a stronger bolt into the frame. Many Sydney homes use both on the front door.

Can you install a lock I bought myself?

Yes, if it suits the door. We check it first and tell you honestly if a different model would be safer or last longer.

Can all my locks use one key?

Usually, yes. We can key new locks alike, and often rekey existing ones to match, so one key opens the front door, the back door and the gate.

Do I need my landlord's permission to add a lock?

In NSW, tenants generally need the landlord's agreement before adding or changing a lock, except in an emergency. Ask your agent first, and we can quote them directly.

Single or double cylinder deadbolt: which do I need?

A single cylinder deadbolt has a key outside and a thumb turn inside. A double cylinder needs a key on both sides, which stops someone reaching through glass to open it, but it slows you down if you need to get out quickly. We help you choose based on the door and who lives in the home.

Do you supply the locks?

Yes. We carry common deadbolts, deadlatches and window locks in the van, and can order a specific brand or finish if you prefer. You can also supply your own lock.

How long does it take to fit a new lock?

It depends on the door and the lock. A standard deadbolt on a solid door is quicker than a lock that needs a new hole pattern or a reinforced strike plate. We give you a time estimate with the price, before any work starts.

Can you fit locks to security screen doors and sliding doors?

Yes. We fit keyed locks to security screen doors, sliding doors and windows, and can set them up to use the same key as your main door where the hardware allows.
